I often tell patients that blurry vision isn’t the only sign your glasses may need updating. You might need glasses—or a prescription change—if you’re squinting, getting headaches, or your eyes feel tired at the end of the day.

Other common signs include losing your place while reading, trouble focusing, or simply not enjoying reading like you used to. Needing brighter light or holding things farther away can also be clues.

If something feels off, trust that instinct. Small vision changes can add up, and an eye exam can usually pinpoint the cause.

I get this question a lot. The short answer is yes—contact lenses can be very safe—but they’re not one-size-fits-all.

Safety depends on having the right lens for your eyes, a proper fit, an appropriate wearing schedule, and good follow-up care. Sticking to recommended cleaning and replacement schedules matters just as much.

When contacts are worn correctly and monitored regularly, most people do very well in them. My job is to make sure they’re not just convenient—but safe for your eyes long-term.

In general, I like to see most patients once a year. Annual exams allow me to check both your vision and the overall health of your eyes.

Some people do need to be seen more often—especially if I’m monitoring an eye condition or if you’re having new or ongoing symptoms. Even if you feel like you’re seeing fine, changes can happen quietly over time.

Regular exams help us stay ahead of problems and keep your vision comfortable.

Dry, irritated eyes are very common, and there’s rarely just one cause. I often see this related to allergies, contact lens wear, hormonal changes, medications, or underlying health conditions.

Because dry eye looks different from person to person, an eye exam is the best place to start. Once we understand what’s driving the problem, we can usually improve comfort significantly.

The most important thing you can do is wear high-quality sunglasses that provide full UV protection. That can be prescription sunglasses, non-prescription sunglasses, or lenses that darken in sunlight—the key is true UV protection.

Not all sunglasses offer the protection they claim, so buying eyewear from a reliable source does matter. I also recommend broad-brimmed hats, which help block sunlight from multiple angles.

You may ask, even for kids? Absolutely – arguably more so!  Children’s pupils are larger, which allows more UV light into the eye, and UV damage adds up over a lifetime. And yes—UV protection matters even on cloudy days.

A comprehensive exam means looking at the entire eye—especially the retina, which is responsible for all the signals going to the brain which you interpret as vision.

Without dilation, I’m essentially looking at your retina through a keyhole. I can see pieces, but not the whole picture. Dilation and/or specialized imaging allows me to evaluate the eye fully and reduces the risk of missing something important.

We only get one set of eyes. My job is to make sure they stay healthy.

Some vision changes are related to aging or genetics and can’t be prevented—but there’s a lot you can do to protect your vision.

Regular eye exams are key. Daily habits matter too: wearing UV protection, taking breaks from screens, managing dry eye, eating a balanced diet, and spending time outdoors—especially for children.

You can’t control everything, but being proactive gives you the best chance of maintaining clear, comfortable vision long-term.

It can be. A very common reason is dryness – when we sleep, we’re not blinking, so the tear film is not refreshed.  That alone can cause blurry vision when you wake up.

Some people also notice morning blur from mild swelling after sleeping in their contact lenses or other sources of inflammation.  And sometimes that focusing system just can’t ‘wake-up’.

That said, if morning blur is frequent, long-lasting, or worsening, an eye exam is a good idea so that we can figure out what is really going on.

First—don’t rub your eye. Rubbing can scratch the surface and make things worse.

If possible, try gently rinsing the eye with clean saline or artificial tears.  Many small particles will wash out on their own.

 If the irritation doesn’t improve or feels like something is stuck, it’s important to have it checked. The longer a foreign body stays in the eye, the more likely it is to cause complications. Seeing an optometrist sooner rather than later usually makes removal easier and helps prevent infection or damage.

Both are eye doctors, but our training and roles differ.

As an optometrist, I provide comprehensive eye exams, diagnose and manage many eye conditions, and prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and help monitor overall eye health.  I am often the first line of care when something feels off with your eyes or your vision.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye surgery and complex eye disease.  When surgery or advanced medical treatment is needed, we work closely together.

The good news is - you don’t have to figure this out on your own.  If you start with an optometrist, I can evaluate your eyes, manage many conditions, and refer you to an ophthalmologist if or when it is necessary.  It’s a team approach, and the goal is always the same:  keeping your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

Digital eye strain is the discomfort many people feel after long periods of screen use.  It can cause tired eyes, headaches, blur, dryness, and trouble focusing – especially at the end of the day.

One of the simplest strategies that can help is the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes on the screen, look away at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.  This gives your eyes the chance to rest and reset.

Other helpful steps include blinking more often, adjusting screen height and lighting, addressing dryness, and using proper eyewear.  We are aware that blue light can also contribute to visual fatigue and disrupt sleep in some patients.  Blue light-filtering lenses can be helpful but they are just one piece of the puzzle.

 If symptoms persist, an eye exam is recommended to isolate the cause and arrive at solutions.

The eyes are an extension of the brain—so what’s good for your brain is generally good for your eyes.  But what is best for your eyes can depend on your age, your eye health and what – if anything – we’re monitoring.

A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables (especially leafy greens), healthy fats, and lean proteins supports eye health. Some people may benefit from supplements, but I don’t recommend starting them without guidance. More isn’t always better.

An eye exam helps determine what—if anything—you actually need.

Nearsightedness means seeing well up close but having trouble at a distance - maybe with road signs or the board at school. Farsightedness often affects near vision and can cause eye strain or headaches.

Some people don’t notice farsightedness right away because their eyes can work harder to compensate – especially when they are younger.  Over time, that extra effort definitely leads to problems.

The good news is that both are very common and easily corrected. An eye exam lets me determine how your eyes are focusing and what correction will be most comfortable.

Astigmatism is very common and simply means the eye isn’t perfectly round. Light doesn’t focus at a single sharp point, which can cause blur or distortion at both near and far distances.

People with astigmatism often notice blurry vision, eye strain, headaches, or difficulty with night driving – but many don’t realize they have it until they have an eye exam.

It’s not a disease and not something you caused. Glasses or contacts are designed to correct it, and most people notice a big improvement once it’s addressed.

Presbyopia is a normal age-related change that happens to everyone over time. As ‘the years go by’ the eye’s natural focusing system becomes less flexible, making close work more difficult.  It is not something we cause and it cannot be avoided.

We are so grateful that there are many ways to manage it—from reading glasses and multifocal lenses to contact lenses and prescription eye drops.  And, there is no ‘right’ solution.  The best approach depends on your eyes, your day-to-day life, and what you want your vision to do for you.  An eye exam helps us to talk through the options and choose what makes the most sense for you.

Over-the-counter reading glasses can be helpful for some people, especially for occasional or short-term use.  They’re easy to find and can work out well in the right situation.

That said, most people don’t have the exact same prescription or focusing needs in both eyes. Over-the-counter readers use identical magnification in each lens meaning, for most of us, one eye is compensating for the other.  Also, for best vision we want the center of the lens to line up with the center of our visual system which varies from person to person.  With over-the counter readers, it is ‘one size fits all’.  Over time these imbalances along with inherent distortions in the lenses can lead to eye strain, headaches, or visual fatigue.

Custom prescription lenses are ground to match each eye individually and to work together as a team.  If you are using readers frequently or noticing discomfort, an eye exam can help determine a more comfortable, long-term solution.

Floaters are small specs, strings, or cobweb-like shapes that drift through your vision.  They’re usually caused by natural changes in the gel inside the eye as we age, and in many cases, they’re harmless.

Flashes of light happen when the gel inside the eye pulls or tugs on the retina, which can stimulate it and create the sensation of seeing light.  This can be part of natural aging – but not always.

A sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light, or a curtain or shadow in your vision can be signs of a more serious problem, such as a retinal tear or detachment.  If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to have your eyes examined promptly.  Most cases are harmless—but they should never be ignored.

Most of the time, eye twitching is harmless.  It’s usually related to things like fatigue, stress, caffeine, eye strain, or dry eyes.  I see it often in people who are tired, spending long hours on screens, or just going through a stressful time in their lives.

These twitches usually come and go on their own and don’t indicate a serious eye problem.  Getting some rest, cutting back on caffeine, taking screen breaks, and addressing dryness often help.

That said, if twitching is persistent, involves more of the face, or doesn’t improve over time, it’s worth having it checked.  An eye exam can help determine whether dryness, strain, or another issue is contributing – and rule out anything more concerning.

It may seem counterintuitive, but one of the most common causes of watery eyes is dry eye.  When the surface of the eye isn’t adequately lubricated, the eyes can overproduce tears in response.

Allergies are another common cause, as well as irritation from wind, smoke, or environmental factors.  In some cases, excessive tearing can be related to how tears drain from the eyes – if the drainage system isn’t working properly, tears may spill over rather than drain away.

Because there are many possible causes, persistent tearing should be evaluated so it can be treated properly.

I often tell patients this: if it feels like an emergency to you, it’s an emergency to me.

Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a rapid increase in floaters, eye pain, significant redness, injury to the eye, or anything that feels sudden or alarming should be evaluated right away.

Trust your instincts.  It’s always better to call and be reassured than to wait and risk missing something important.  Your vision matters!

The short answer is - you usually can’t. Children often don’t realize their vision isn’t normal, because they assume everyone sees the way they do.

Vision isn’t just about what a child can see; it’s about how the eyes are functioning and working together, and that plays a critical role in learning and development.  Many vision issues don’t cause obvious complaints, but they can still affect reading, attention, and school performance.

That’s why regular exams are so important for children – even if you think their vision seems fine. Early exams allow us to catch problems during key developmental years, when treatment can make the biggest difference.
